Theater Reviews: Evita
October 29, 2013 – FrontiersLA.com
I don’t have the best history with Andrew Lloyd Weber’s iconic musical
about the controversial Eva Peron. I saw a bland touring company version in
college that nearly put me to sleep, and the Madonna film version—while
looking pretty—was also a bit of a snooze. So I wasn’t that excited to see
the new incarnation that blew up on Broadway a few years ago and is now
making its way around the country. I wasn’t convinced I was going to be won
over without a known 'star' in any of the lead roles. I was a bit ho-hum
about the whole affair, which was actually perfect, because it was such a
wonderful surprise when I fell in love with this production.

The Glamorous Fox Theater became a window to the past on Tuesday as it
was opening night for Evita. A play scribed by Andrew Lloyd and
Tim Rice which tells the sultry story of Eva Peron and her husband, Juan
Peron. Eva is played by Caroline Bowman and Juan is played by Sean
MacLaughlin. Both bring passion and life to historical figures that walked
this Earth in a tremultuious time.
Evita star gives new voice to Che

When charismatic Tony nominee Josh Young takes the stage in "Evita," do
not expect Cuban activist revolutionary Che Guevera to show up. In the
recent Broadway revival, which is based on the 2006 London West End
production, the narrator role was re-interpreted as an Argentinian working
class guy. That's the distinct characterization Young developed when he
played the role at the Stratford Shakespeare Festival in 2010, and now
again in the national tour.
Evita revival exceeds expectations
September 30, 2013 – DepauliaOnline.com
Reviving a musical is never an easy feat. Most productions draw fans
clutching worn-out Broadway soundtracks, who can sing each lyric in their
sleep. Each new rendition of a beloved show must simultaneously win over
these individuals while also providing new audiences with a chance to fall
in love. This can be a daunting task, though this fall, the U.S. tour of
Evita has mastered it exceptionally. The show hums with new life
and it will be in Chicago for a limited time.
Evita review by Michael Horn

Evita is the inspiration of lyricist Tim Rice and composer
Andrew Lloyd Weber. It began as a rock opera concept album in 1976, opened
as a musical at London’s West End in 1978, and premiered on Broadway in
1979 to rave reviews, earning 7 Tony Awards, including Best Musical, the
first British production to do so. Since then, this magnificent
work has been performed on stages large and small around the world and it
remains one of the most popular musicals of all time.
